The Role The Corporate Controller will report to the Chief Operating Officer and own the firm’s financial operating system across corporate accounting, treasury, firmwide consolidation, planning, reporting, and financial systems. This leader will ensure a16z operates with accurate financial data, disciplined financial processes, scalable systems, and clear visibility into performance across the management company and related entities. This role will lead corporate accounting operations, payroll, accounts payable, expense accounting, treasury and cash management, firmwide financial consolidation, budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting. The Corporate Controller will partner closely with Fund Finance, Tax, HR, Legal, IT, vertical leadership, and firm leadership to ensure financial information is accurate, timely, actionable, and built on repeatable processes. The successful candidate will be a strong accounting operator with experience leading finance teams in a complex investment management, asset management, private equity, venture capital, or similarly multi-entity environment. While technical accounting expertise is helpful, this role is primarily focused on operational excellence, financial discipline, systems architecture, process modernization, and team leadership. Given a16z’s scale, global operations, multinational entity structure, and continued growth, this leader will build and continuously improve the infrastructure required to support the firm’s next stage. This includes owning the Workday financial roadmap, improving expense and accounting automation, strengthening financial data architecture, and modernizing the team’s approach to reduce manual work, improve accuracy, and increase the speed and quality of financial reporting. Core systems used by a16z: Workday, Navan, Planful. This role requires an in-office presence 2-3 days a week in our Menlo Park, CA or San Francisco, CA office.
