Element Science, Inc. is a medical device and digital health company redefining how patients with heart disease are monitored and treated as they transition from the hospital to the home. Our mission is to improve outcomes for patients at risk of life-threatening cardiac events through innovative solutions at the intersection of clinical-grade wearables, advanced algorithms, and therapy delivery. We are entering an exciting phase of growth as we move from development into early commercialization. Our approach combines hardware, software, and services to deliver a more personalized and seamless patient experience—designed with both patients and clinicians in mind. Our product, a wearable patch defibrillator, is designed for patients with a temporary elevated risk of sudden cardiac arrest, addressing a significant and underserved population of over 500,000 patients in the U.S. By focusing on comfort, usability, and clinical effectiveness, we aim to transform the standard of care during this critical period. Headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, Element Science is backed by leading healthcare and technology investors, including Third Rock Ventures, GV (Google Ventures), Deerfield Healthcare, Qiming Venture Partners USA, Cormorant Asset Management, and Invus Opportunities. SUMMARY OF ROLE: The Staff Electrical Engineer will lead the design, development, verification and validation of complex Class III medical device electronics, from concept through manufacturing transfer. This role combines deep technical expertise in analog, digital, and high-voltage board design with strong leadership in cross-functional project execution. The engineer will drive hardware bring-up, system integration, and verification activities; manage critical vendors; and collaborate closely with Systems, Mechanical, Firmware, and Manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet performance, cost, and regulatory requirements. The position also involves mentoring junior engineers, contributing to design reviews, and supporting commercial-stage manufacturing and field activities. This is a hybrid role based in our San Francisco office, with a planned transition to our Redwood City, CA office within the year. We are in office every other week Tuesday through Thursday. RESPONSIBILITIES: Deliver board-level designs including analysis, schematics, and PCB layout for Class III products with sensitive analog front-end circuits, sensors, power, and high voltage. Lead electrical design work-streams within multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring scope, schedule, and deliverables are met. Drive technical decision-making, balancing performance, cost, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements. Develop and characterize designs through bench testing, system integration, and the creation of supporting test fixtures. Qualify critical alternate components as necessary that meet design needs. Perform failure analysis and document investigations to support manufacturing scale. Sustaining engineering efforts: Develop designs with components selected for cost reduction or obsolescence, and support qualifying alternate suppliers. Dry-run engineering tests and conduct / guide design verification test protocols. Support EMC/EMI testing and compliance activities, including preparation, execution, and troubleshooting to ensure designs meet applicable IEC standards such as IEC 60601. Document design descriptions and engineering analysis to support Manufacturing and Quality. Support Commercial Stage activities including manufacturing support, New Product Introduction programs, and Field Failure Analysis. Provide technical support for cross-functional teams, including Systems, Mechanical, Firmware, and Manufacturing Engineering. Facilitate effective collaboration across disciplines, aligning design activities with project milestones and product requirements. Provide peer review of designs and documentation. Mentor junior engineers as the team size grows. QUALIFICATIONS: MSEE or BSEE w
